Whew!!! Time Flies!!

Hello Everyone!!

I can't believe we are in March!! How did that happen? I would like to give you a little information about where were and where we're headed.

Math - We just completed the concepts of mass and capacity. Your child should be able to confidently decide which unit should be used to measure a particular item e.g., banana (grams), water that would fit in a bottle cap (ml), the weight of a textbook (kg) and so on. We are now moving into measuring length using mm, cm, m and km, along with measuring the perimeter and area of a variety of 2D shapes.

Language - In reading, students are learning how to dig deeper into the text and use the information in the readings to support their reading responses. They will be using what they already know about a variety of topics to enhance their reading responses. In writing, we continue to practice writing paragraphs and procedural pieces. Please remind your children to slowwwww down when writing and take the time to check over their work before handing it in. At times, students rush and make unnecessary errors. They have a ton of great writing ideas, but now need to polish their work.

Religion - We have been studying the 10 Commandments and how God's word translates to modern times. We have been studying Jesus' miracles and the impact he still has in our hearts today.

Science - We are finishing Forces and will be leaving Science to learn about our Social Studies unit, Living and Working in Ontario. The students had a BLAST creating their research/media and Makey Makey Forces project. What a difference in the enthusiasm and energy in the room when you add a little technology into their assignments! Love it!

Notes:

**school supplies are dwindling** - if possible, please make sure your child has a ruler, scissors, pencil and an eraser.

*ask your child about the 'Poem of the Month'

*please continue to send warm outerwear until the end of April

* please come in and check the lost and found when something goes missing

*if any family finds a boys Roots sweatshirt that has been brought home accidentally (awhile back) please return asap as we have a family looking for it

* we have a Shine Project in progress. We recently read a book about helping those who don't have enough. The students decided to do something about those who don't have enough in our community. I have asked the kids to bring in a bit of money to donate to this cause. We have about 12$ so far.  Once we have enough, we will go to Metro (with permission forms of course), purchase non-perishable food that is on sale (try to make the most of our money) and I will deliver it to the homeless shelter on behalf of the class.

Well, I think that's all for now. Thank you for supporting your child's learning this year! It has truly been a FANTASTIC year so far! I am thoroughly enjoying this class! I hope your kids come home with a smile :)

Remember- if you need me for anything, please call between 8:25-9:00 any day or write a note in the agenda.

Weekend Math Challenges

Hello Parents,

Well fall is here and the days will be getting chilly! That means less time outside for the kids and usually more complaints of boredom right?

If your child is looking for a math challenge, check out their online classroom (Google Classroom) for weekend challenges. They aren't easy and are usually multi-step. They may need your help. I always ask that they include their calculations and show their work.

Have fun!

ROBOTS/TECHNOLOGY/CODING IN EDUCATION

This year your child will be participating in lessons that use Makey Makey, Beebots, Dash and Dot and Sphero. Accessing the curriculum using robots allows the students to experience learning in a new and engaging way. Time to get EXCITED about learning!

Our first week together was a success! The students are starting to get a handle on the routines and have met our virtual student Google Home (ask your child to explain). I have also given each child "jitter glitter" to help fight off any anxiety.

Just a couple parent items:

*please check agenda daily - students are to copy the entire agenda board daily so you should never see an empty agenda space in the evening. Once they are finished the item, they are to cross it off. So, any items that are not crossed off is what you should see in their backpack for homework.

*please send coloured pencils - crayons are okay for some things, but not precise for maps, arts etc.

*We are starting math on Monday....please ask you child to see their work regularly to make sure they are on track and feeling confident.

*If you need anything, issues or questions arise, please call me between 8:30-9:00.

Thanks and see you at Meet the Teacher.

                                                         WELCOME BACK!

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year!

This blog will be used throughout the year to post information, pictures and update you about what your child is working on in the classroom. Look for posts titled, "A Look Inside" to see students in action throughout the day.

In my next post, I will give you a brief subject overview of where we are headed academically over the next month.
